Last Legs is a fly-on-the-wall insight into the life of an upmarket retirement community - The Cambridge. Affairs, grudges, dodgy deals, ailments, love and lust - it’s there in all its unglamorous but hysterical glory. News that the Prime Minister is to open a new wing sparks a revolution among its residents. Many want to turn on something special, but others are less enthused and plan to stage a protest. Life in this village is anything but dull!
Director
Glenda is delighted to be directing again at the Dolphin - theatre is her passion! A reviewer of NZ theatre for Broadway World, and www.playshakespeare.com, Glenda is also active in many other aspects of theatre happily working in wardrobe, front of house, scriptwriting, directing, adjudication, set design – and when the chance arises, acting. Favourite roles include Electra in Electra, Hermione in The Winter’s Tale, and Antonia in Can’t Pay, Won’t Pay. She recently studied performance and directing Shakespeare at The Globe, London. Glenda is the director of an extensive communication arts, public speaking and dramatic arts practice in Auckland - facilitating the development of confident, expressive and artistic voices. She enjoys the opportunity to facilitate weekend theatre workshops for amateur companies. Every play is the delightful result of significant teamwork – and the Dolphin excels in this regard. She has appreciated working alongside the dedicated and talented designers, construction team and crew, and of course the superb cast. In terms of her interpretation of Last Legs, she wanted to “people” the retirement village Sir Roger Hall envisaged, and hopefully capture the contemporary world of the “mature” rather than the “old”. Do we recognise any of the “types” of the residents of this complex?
Cast
as STEVE
Pete Smith was born during WWII and is still alive. Always interested in music, he took up singing as a young feller (63 from memory) when arthritis put paid to classical guitar. He is still working full time and intends to retire in about 10 years. This is Peter’s acting debut
as RESIDENT
Paul is a retired ex-postal worker and union official. He stood twice for the Alliance Party in the parliamentary elections. Paul has also published two books of poetry! This is Paul’s acting debut.
as SHEILA
Linda is no stranger to Dolphin last seen in Arsenic & Old Lace, and previously in Spirit Level, Closure, and Wife After Death. She also appeared in Company’s production of Steel Magnolias in 2019. Linda has been involved both acting and directing for Stables, Playhouse, Titirangi and Waitemata theatres. This is not the first Roger Hall she has been involved in and it is as always, a fun script with plenty of laughs and real-life moments.
as JESSIE
As a resident in a retirement village not a hundred miles from here, Margaret can really appreciate Roger Hall’s wry and funny “take” on senior community life in Last Legs. She has been involved with Dolphin Theatre since 1986, her last play for them being Calendar Girls in 2015. Margaret also appears regularly on the Stables Stage, most recently as Mam in The Lady in the Van in 2018.
as RESIDENT
Josephine has enjoyed many years with a variety of choirs and with the Marvellous Theatre Group. A highlight was being a “Diva” at the Civic Theatre Open Days and recently performing as a “Has Been Diva” to local audiences. Her interests include local history, gardening and travel..
as TRISH
Sue has a Licentiate (Trinity College, London) performers qualification and has worked extensively with most Auckland community theatres. She is delighted to return to Dolphin. Other productions here include Ladies Who Lunch, Body Double, The Winslow Boy, Bonaventure, Laying the Ghost, We’ll Always Have Paris, Calendar Girls, Spreading Out and Alan Bennett’s Talking Heads. Her most recent Dolphin appearance was in Roger Hall’s Bookends for NZ Theatre month last September..
as EDNA
Although a first time performer at the Dolphin, Pam has performed and directed at Howick Little Theatre and the Stables. She loves the opportunity to play the role of Edna: passionate, brave and possessing a dry self-depreciating humour. Pam believes Edna would share a bottle of wine with Kitty! The naughty laughs between these two ladies remind Pam of times spent with her friends in the UK, having drinks in the pub after rehearsals.
as HELENA
Bronwen performed in Middle-Aged Spread (Dolphin 1990). Fast forward 30 years she finds herself in the Cambridge Retirement Village. Bronwen played Noeline in Taking Off (Titirangi Theatre 2008), then Jean (Manukau PA 2013). Her favourite Roger Hall A Shortcut to Happiness (Howick LT 2013) combined her two loves: folk-dancing and acting. She hopes her studies at Elam School of Fine Art help ‘Helena’ in this production. She won Dolphin’s ‘Best Character -female’ for Memory of Water (2013) and Go Back for Murder (2019).
as KITTY
Ami has been actively involved in theatre for most of her life, as an actor, director and mime artist in Australia and abroad. She first appeared at the Dolphin playing Constance in Last Of The Summer Wine before going on to direct Crimes Of The Heart. .After directing A Savage Dilemma for Titirangi Theatre and Peter Pan for the Harlequin, Ami took a break from theatre to focus on many projects in film and TV including Tropfest and the 48-hour film festival.
as GARRY
Most of Mark’s acting has been in the context of youth work, entertaining at private functions and performing at faith-based events. He has trained music/drama teams of young people to tour NZ and Pacific schools and taught intermediate school drama. Mark appeared in Roger Hall’s Bookends at Howick Little Theatre in 2017 and Goodnight Mr Tom at Dolphin Theatre in 2018. Mark sees Last Legs as a suitable dress rehearsal for becoming a resident at some unfortunate retirement village in the future..
as ANGUS
Andrew’s last appearance was at Centrestage in Twelve Angry Men and before that at Howick Little Theatre in May 2018 in House at the Lake. He was also Hasselbacher in the 2017 production of Our Man in Havana and Tomb with a View at the Dolphin Theatre. Earlier performances were as Major Courtney in Howick Little Theatre’s production of The Ladykillers, also at Harlequin Musical Theatre in Guys and Dolls as Arvide Abernethy and in Oliver as Mr Brownlow. Dramatic work includes performances with the Marvellous Theatre Company notably in a dramatic reading of Maurice Shadbolt’s Once on Chunuk Bair and recent appearances in several short films..

After some time away, Herald is pleased to return to Auckland and to the Performing Arts. She enjoyed taking part in some successful readings during the 2019 Dolphin Season of Dark Days and Theatre Month, and she is hoping that Last Legs will not prove to be the end of the line!
