About the Play

Four spirited women live at Beach Haven, a small, privately run rest home overlooking the sea. It is more than a residence to them. It is their home, their sanctuary and, in many ways, their family.

But when the property comes under threat from developers, aided by an officious local councillor, owner Sarah and her residents are forced to find an extraordinary amount of money to save it. Their fundraising schemes grow increasingly ambitious, from jumble sales and art auctions to the unlikely discovery of a few hidden treasures.

When those plans still fall short, the women arrive at their boldest idea yet: becoming telephone “Call Girls”.

Fast-paced, warm-hearted and packed with sharp humour, Call Girls is a distinctly Kiwi comedy about friendship, resilience and a group of women who refuse to let age, bureaucracy or common sense stand in their way.

GLENDA PEARCE

Having directed more than 25 productions, Glenda Pearce returns to Dolphin Theatre for her fourth show. She enjoys mixing classic and contemporary work, with previous Dolphin productions including An Inspector Calls in 2018, Last Legs in 2020 and Black Coffee in 2024.

Glenda is delighted to be working with an outstanding cast and creative team on one of the newest comedies to reach the New Zealand stage. She is passionate about every aspect of performance and production, and believes that at the heart of every production must be exactly that: heart.

Her theatre experience spans directing, acting, wardrobe, front of house, publicity, props, set design, sound and lighting. Away from the stage, Glenda teaches Theatre at Diocesan School for Girls and runs her own specialist practice, NZ Dynamic Speaking. She is also a registered New Zealand professional speaker, a New Zealand-accredited performing arts adjudicator, a qualified Speech New Zealand examiner and a long-standing reviewer for BroadwayWorld.com.
