AUDITION NOTES
The listed ages are a guide only. Casting decisions will be based on suitability for the characters, relationships between performers and the overall balance of the cast. Actors outside the suggested age ranges are encouraged to audition if they feel suited to a role.
The principal roles are Katurian, Tupolski, Ariel and Michal. The roles of Mother, Father and Little Jesus Girl are intended to be filmed rather than performed live on stage, using a visual style inspired by early silent cinema, including Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin. Mute Girl is a smaller supporting role.
The Pillowman is a darkly comic psychological drama exploring storytelling, imagination, childhood trauma, cruelty and the relationship between art and responsibility. The play moves between unsettling humour, intense interrogation scenes and moments of genuine tenderness and emotional vulnerability.
The production requires actors who can balance the heightened, sometimes absurd nature of the writing with truthful, emotionally grounded performances. Some material involves disturbing themes, including violence towards children, and applicants should familiarise themselves with the nature of the play before auditioning.
Full scripts and selected audition pieces will be supplied following submission of an audition application.
Dolphin theatre is a community theatre and is run entirely by volunteers.
All acting roles are unpaid.
