The Gradute

DIRECTOR’S NOTeS

This play is an interesting study in the society of middle class America ofriginally set in the 60s. Morality that we may not think so much about causes quite a drama in the lives of the Braddocks and the Robinsons and I'm so looking forward to directing this classic tale. Most will be fairly familiar with the Dustin Hoffman/Anne Bancroft movie; the play is a little different but the themes and dialogue are essentially the same. If people wish to watch the movie as prep that is up to them but bear in mind I absolutely am not inclined to reproduce the movie and will be directing to my vision. I think a 21st century exploration of this play and the attitudes of the times will be a fascinating journey that I'm really looking forward to start.

Note there are several roles below where actors have one scene but will be doubled up as two or more roles so they're interesting roles for actors who like to diversify their roles. The audition pieces are all for the main characters as the supporting roles are dotted throughout the script (except for the stripper) to keep audition times down. If actors could indicate where they are interested or prefer a smaller role with multiple characters.

This is a play that will challenge the actors through emotional range.
