Black Coffee
by Agatha Christie
Directed by Glenda Pearce
Agatha Christie embarked on her theatrical journey back in 1930 with the creation of her very first play. The narrative revolves around Sir Claud Amory, who finds himself in a perilous situation after his groundbreaking explosive formulation is stolen. In a bid to unmask the culprit, Sir Claud orchestrates a shrewd plan by confining his guests to the library, setting the stage for a gripping tale of enigma. The tension escalates dramatically when the room is illuminated, exposing the lifeless body of Sir Claud. This unforeseen event thrusts Hercule Poirot and Captain Hastings into a web of familial disputes, romantic complexities, and dubious characters. Their quest transcends mere identification of the killer; it extends to the crucial mission of averting a potential worldwide catastrophe.

Director's Note
I eagerly embraced the creative opportunity to bring a work (in its entirety) to life! My concept was to flesh out and detail the world in which the characters lived; to set the mystery firmly in 1928. This was the year that Agatha Christie wrote her first play; it was a period of significant change in fashion, moral codes, art, music and of course, science! I hoped for truthfulness, energy and light within the intriguing mystery. We love the idea of everyone having their own story, revealed and shown - and thus, a book title!
My sincere thanks to the talented cast and creative team (wardrobe, sound, lighting, props, set, and my superb PA Carleen) who have worked tirelessly to cement this vision. Every production is the result of hundreds of hours of teamwork, research, dedication and support by many more people than you’d ever imagine.– and special thanks to the Stage Managers and technical team who ensure the show runs as planned!
Of course, whodunnits present interesting challenges – enjoy the show – be prepared to find the humour and to play detective. And - after seeing the show, please don’t tell anyone who dunnit!!
