Dolphin brings this high-spirited production to the stage with as much ‘Humbug’ as you can take! It wouldn’t be Christmas without this age old classic. A tale of greed, grief, ghoulish ghosts and redemption. Patrick Barlow’s imaginative adaptation brings a fresh new vision with wit, flair and theatrical invention. The best of family entertainment - laughter, illusions, surprises, puppets, ghosts and your favourite colourful Dickensian characters that promise theatre entertainment at its finest.

Playwright

Charles Dickens

Charles was an English writer and social critic. He created some of the world's best-known fictional characters and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. His works enjoyed unprecedented popularity during his lifetime and, by the 20th century, critics and scholars had recognised him as a literary genius. His novels and short stories are widely read today.

Patrick Barlow

Patrick Barlow, writer of the Broadway and West End hit The 39 Steps, has retold Charles Dickens’ holiday classic, A Christmas Carol. This thrilling adaptation uses only five actors to bring some of Dickens' most beloved characters to life. From Scrooge and Tiny Tim to Bob Cratchit and Mrs. Fezziwig, Barlow's A Christmas Carol uses nothing more than some simple props, fresh physicality, and the power of imagination to convey this timeless story of redemption. Witness Ebenezer Scrooge's transformation from a stingy miser to a man who generously celebrates the spirit of the season all year long, in this highly theatrical adaptation.

Director

Syd Mannion

Syd has been a regular actor, designer and director at the Dolphin Theatre where he last directed the riotous Nell Gwynn. The recipient of 23 theatrical awards, seven of which were for Best Production, he has worked with many Auckland theatres and also directed Jane Austen’s Lady Susan, Shadowlands, Terra Nova, The Woman in Black, Present from the Past, Improbable Fiction, God of Carnage, the NZ premiere of George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four and Jeeves and Wooster in Perfect Nonsense. A Christmas Carol is a very challenging and complex production that he feels very privileged to direct.
